easy hummus wreath recipe

Christmas is just around the corner, and you know what that means: family gatherings, gift exchanges, and lots of delicious party foods! For many kids, this is the highlight of the year — and honestly, it's easy to see why! With all the cheerful decorations, wrapped presents, and fun family traditions, what kid wouldn't wish for it to be Christmas every day?

But for parents? Christmas can be a bit of a nightmare! Between the shopping, decorating, and hosting, it can feel like there's never enough time in the day to get everything done. More so, add the pressure of preparing the ultimate Christmas feast for their loved ones, and it can feel like too much, even for us Super Mums!

Sure, you can say that you'll just throw something together at the last minute or order takeaways ... but that's not really an option if you want to make the celebration truly magical!

Our advice? Plan ahead! There are plenty of traditional recipes to choose from, but there's one that we believe deserves a place on your table this year: Hummus!

Perfect as a snack or appetiser, hummus is a healthy and delicious way to start off your meal and keep the grum-bellies at bay while waiting for the mains. It is made from cooked and mashed chickpeas, which are high in protein, fibre, B vitamins, and other essential nutrients. So if you've got guests with dietary restrictions, this dish is a great option. It can be made with or without certain ingredients and spices, depending on your preferences, so it's easy to customise according to who will be eating it.

And the best part? You can make a big batch ahead of time and store it in the fridge, so it's ready to go when you need it. And since it's Christmas we're talking about here, we'll share with you one unique way to serve it up in a way you've never seen before! Don't believe us? Follow along with this post from start to finish, and you'll see what we mean.

For now, let's start with the recipe for our base ingredient: hummus.

  • 240 g (1 ½ cups) chickpeas, cooked
  • equates to 1 400 g tin
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp tahini
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ tbsp cumin
  • salt to taste
  • olive oil

As mums, we understand that life can get pretty crazy, especially during this time of the year. Since making hummus from scratch may be too time-consuming, it’s perfectly ok to purchase it from the store as a time-saving shortcut. Today, you can find a variety of flavours, like roasted red pepper or garlic, at most grocery stores.

Once you’ve got your hummus in hand, it’s time to get creative!

Hummus Wreath

Makes 1 platter | Prep 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500 g (2 cups) hummus
  • 75 g (½ cup) feta cheese, crumbled
  • 20 g (1 cup) fresh basil, finely chopped
  • 4-5 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • Half a red capsicum

Method

Place a We Might Be Tiny Grip Cup in the middle of a large round platter.

Dollop the hummus around the cup, then use the back of a spoon to spread it evenly into a wreath shape.

Sprinkle the chopped basil on top of the hummus layer.

Evenly sprinkle the crumbled feta over the basil layer.

Place halved cherry tomatoes, cut side down, randomly on top of the basil.

Using a very sharp knife, carefully cut a bow out of the red capsicum and place it on the wreath.

Serve and enjoy with dippers of your choice. We love toasted pita chips, raw veggie sticks, and rice crackers.
