Making Gummies a Holi-Date
Need a quick snack or healthy treat for your little ones?
If, like every person in the universe, you’re a fan of gummies, then you’ll enjoy making these healthy, colourful candies. They’re surprisingly simple and perfect for tiny fingers that want to help out.
Let your munchkins help blitz the fruit, and carefully sieve the juice. They can also take turns pouring the liquids into the silicone moulds. Simply gather all the ingredients beforehand and be sure to supervise when handling the juice while it’s hot.
These are great to make ahead and last about a week in the fridge!
Now, you might be worried about turning your kitchen into a disaster zone, especially since homemade gummies can be tricky, and manually cutting out stars from rectangular pans can be challenging. We’re solving all that dilemma with our WMBT Freeze & Bake Poddies!
This silicone freezer tray helps make this already easy recipe a no-brainer. And you can have a lot of fun with flavours and shapes. These poddies are also dishwasher-friendly, completely eliminating messy clean-ups.
What’s In Our Gummi Stars?
Gelatin gummies are a great alternative to store-bought jellies and sugar-laden candies that use a lot of artificial flavours and preservatives. These raspberry and coconut Gummi Stars are naturally sweetened with maple syrup, so not only are they delicious, but they are also packed with nutrients.
You only need three basic ingredients that are common to any pantry; each step is so easy and doesn’t take much time at all.
FROZEN RASPBERRIES
These are an excellent source of fibre and vitamin C. Compared to other berries, raspberries also make it to the list of those lowest in natural sugar contents!
UNFLAVOURED GELATIN
This transforms our fruit juice into a jiggly treat in just a few hours.
Gelatin needs to ‘bloom’ first in cold liquid in order to thicken. For our Gummies, we sprinkle the gelatin powder onto the fruit juice and let it sit for a few minutes until it’s thickened into a slurry consistency. We then apply low heat to dissolve the gelatin.
Remember not to boil the mixture to avoid turning it into a rubbery consistency.
COCONUT MILK
Loaded with vitamins and minerals, it also contains essential fats and nutrients that strengthen the immune system.
Makes 80 stars | Prep 20 minutes
Ingredients
RED
- 100 g (1 cup) raspberries, frozen
- 125 ml (1⁄2 cup) filtered water
- 3 tbsp gelatin
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract
WHITE
- 250 ml (1 cup) coconut milk
- 3 tbsp gelatin
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract
Method
To make the red gummies, add the frozen raspberries and water to a high-speed food processor and blitz until smooth.
Sieve the liquid to remove most of the seeds, leaving you with red juice.
Pour the juice into a small pan and gradually add the gelatin, allowing it to be absorbed into the juice.
Let sit for a few minutes and allow the mixture to thicken.
Over low heat gently stir for about five minutes until it is hot and has become runny.
Be careful not to boil the mixture as this will give it a very rubbery texture.
Add the maple syrup and vanilla extract and stir to combine.
Pour the mixture into the star moulds, filling each star halfway.
Allow the mixture five minutes of resting time before placing it in the refrigerator. This helps to improve both the shine of the gummies and their taste.
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, then repeat with the coconut milk.
Once set, pop stars out of the tray and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
A Treat For All Seasons
This winner of a dessert is a fresh, fruity, and festive blend of summer flavours. But there are plenty of combinations your munchkins will enjoy just as much.
Here are some of our other favourites over at the WMBT HQ:
- Mangoes & Coconut Milk: Sweet yellow mangoes are the ultimate summer-ready pick-me-up for extra hot days.
- Sunny Orange: Zesty orange adds a fun, citrusy pop of flavour.
- Blueberries: Frozen blueberries are another bright option you’ll want in your lineup – mixed berries work just as well. Swap your coconut milk with Greek yoghurt for a punch of probiotics.
