A healthy take on Hot Cross Buns: Our Hot Cross Poddies
Nowadays Hot Cross Buns come in countless flavour combinations that are impossible to keep track of. Every year there’s a new fancy addition to tempt us into buying yet another pack of these sugar-loaded seasonal delights.
We don’t really want to. But we just can’t resist.
Here’s our solution for you: Homemade We Might Be Tiny Hot Cross Poddies.
With no refined sugar in sight these iconic Easter treats are a tempting alternative that basically gives you permission to snack away without the guilt that usually follows. We’ve done a fair few test bakes here in the We Might Be Tiny kitchen and they hit the sweet spot with young and old.
We like to use our Freeze & Bake Poddie to turn these healthy Hot Cross Buns into mini versions of our super cute signature characters Bunny, Cat and Bear. The only problem you’ll have is getting your munchkin to settle on their favourite, because they’re all irresistible.

Makes 9 buns | Prep 3 hours
Ingredients
BUNS
- 400 g (3 cups) or (14 oz) while spelt flour
- 250 ml (1 cup) or (8 ½ fl oz) milk of choice
- 17g (¼ oz) sachet of dried yeast
- ½ tsp all spice
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 tbsp maple syrup zest of 1 orange
- 100 g (¾ cup) or (3 ½ oz) sultanas
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
CROSSES
- 55 g (⅔ cup) or (2 oz) flour
- 4 ½ tbsp water
Method
Grease poddies mould.
Gently heat milk in a pan over a medium heat until lukewarm.
Remove from heat and add yeast and maple syrup. Stir to combine and set aside for 10-15 minutes until mixture starts to foam. This shows that the yeast is active.
In a large bowl combine flour, spices, orange zest,and sultanas. Add yeast mixture, coconut oil,and vanilla extract, and mix until a sticky dough begins to form.
Place dough on a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until dough is smooth and stretchy
Place dough in a large, greased bowl the cover and leave in a warm place to rise for an hour until doubled in size.
Transfer to a floured surface and divide into 9 portions. Place into poddies mould and cover with a clean tea towel. Allow to prove for an hour in a warm place.
Meanwhile Preheat oven to 180 C and make hot cross mix by sifting flour into a bowl, adding water, and mixing until a smooth paste forms.
When hot cross poddies are ready for the oven, pipe cross mixture to form crosses on the top.
Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden.
Remove from the oven and brush with maple syrup to glaze and leave to cool before serving.
