Mum’s Homemade Hot Cocoa

Are you having that kind of a day, mum?

As much as we strive to be on top of things, there are moments when we want to hit pause.

For when you need something warm, comforting, and slightly naughty, nothing compares to a rich and creamy cup of hot cocoa.

If you’re in search of the best hot chocolate recipe to satisfy your cocoa cravings, we’ve got just the thing.

This recipe we’re sharing is called Hug In A Mug for a reason! It’s a quick and easy fix you’ll love to indulge in at any time of the day. Whether it’s for an energising morning boost, a mid-day coffee alternative, or a soothing sip before bed, this is a recipe you’ll want to save.

And guess what, mums, if you like this recipe, you will enjoy the other nine included in WMBT’s soon-to-be-released booklet, "Drinks for Mum". There you’ll find a range of recipes – from your morning coffee to a power smoothie to an ice-cold gin and tonic. It’s always a great idea to have season-spanning, all-occasion beverages on standby! So be sure to check that one out, too.

Hot Cocoa Vs. Hot Chocolate

Did you know that there’s a difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate? We did, and it’s pretty significant, if not basic.

Simply put, hot cocoa is made from cocoa powder, while hot chocolate is from actual chocolate.

Hot chocolate is a bit more luxurious with a seriously supple, silky, and smooth texture due to its high fat content. Hot Cocoa is a sweeter, lighter beverage that’s equally comforting and a lot simpler to make.

Over at the WMBT HQ, we love ourselves a good ol’ cup of hot cocoa. Our version combines the decadence of homemade hot chocolate with the healthier goodness of raw cocoa powder.

One of the best things we love about this simple recipe is how it’s as easy to make as opening a packet bought from the grocery. And it’s much more convenient (and less expensive!) than heading to the café.

So skip the extra calories and high amounts of sugar with pantry-ready ingredients that are better for you.

  • Cocoa Powder – Choose 100% unsweetened cocoa powder. This is readily available in any baking aisle at the grocery store.
  • Milk – For this recipe, we used whole milk to achieve a creamy, dreamy texture. Other milk options, such as 2%, work great, too. To make a dairy-free or vegan version, we love this with canned coconut milk, almond milk, or soy milk.
  • Vanilla Deepen the chocolate flavour by adding a hint of vanilla.
  • Sweetener Adjust the sweetness to your taste using either granulated sugar, maple syrup, stevia drops – name it! Our pick? Heart-healthy honey.

More Reasons To Love Mum’s Homemade Hot Cocoa

Everyone loves hot cocoa. It’s a universal fact!

Make preparing it a bonding activity with your kids by letting the little munchkins help out and share in the goodness! They’ll have so much fun choosing their own special toppings. Whether they’re team whipped cream or team mallows, it’s sure to be big smiles all around.

Toppings we love to have on rotation:

  • Cinnamon
  • Whipped cream
  • Ice cream
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Peppermint candy canes
  • Sprinkles

When you’re in the mood for some hot cocoa and a good dose of cheer, then you need to serve up your Hug In A Mug with the WMBT Silicone Grip Cup.

This non-toxic, durable, and dishwasher-safe silicone cup is the perfect vessel for your hot beverage because it holds on to the heat without burning your hands, making it safe for both you and your tiny tots! Bye-bye single-use plastics, hello reusable silicone cups.

This healthier Hug In A Mug version beats store-bought alternatives EVERY TIME. The sweetness is just right—just enough to bring out the chocolate flavour without being overpowering.

It’s also a versatile drink that can easily be transformed to suit your mood. Temperature too high to enjoy it served hot? No problem. Enjoy it instantly icy by making it ahead of time and storing in the fridge.

Here’s a trick we like to do over at the WMBT HQ – we freeze a batch in WMBT Freeze & Bake Poddies, pop out four to five pods, and pour our milk over it for a refreshing mid-day treat.

It’s such an easy and eco-friendly way to elevate our everyday culinary creations!
